Intro to Portuguese Knitting
Are you looking to learn a new technique? Or do you struggle with knitting for too long due to carpal tunnel or arthritis? Portuguese knitting uses a pin or necklace to tension your yarn instead of your hands, therefore reducing strain. And, it’s just fun!
Stephanie will introduce you to the various tools and get you on your way to knitting the Portuguese way!
Skills Needed: Cast on, knit, purl, slipped stitches
Skills you will gain: Basic knowledge of the Portuguese style for knit, purl and slipped stitches
Supplies: DK or Worsted Weight yarn, knitting needles for gauge, choice of Portuguese knitting pin or necklace, sample of stockinette knitting, left on needles. Optional supplies: Stitch markers and note taking material
Yarn: Worsted or DK weight of a light color
Needles: size needed for gauge to achieve a firm and even stockinette stitch sample approximately 4 in. usually US size 5-8
Homework, Sample of stockinette knitting:
Cast on an approximate number of stitches for a minimum 4 inch sample, usually between 20 -30 stitches, depending on yarn weight and tension. Knit in stockinette, slipping either the first or last stitch of each row, until the recommended approximate size has been reached. Knit the last two rows of the sample in garter stitch, ending on the purl side of the sample. Leave on the needles and bring your sample to class.
*At least 1 skein of class yarn must be purchased from Fox River Fibers. All supplies purchased for the class will be 10% off.
You will get a Portuguese Knitting necklace with the purchase of the class
